Austin’s Families Belong Together Rally (along with many other cities nationwide) took place on a hot sweltering day on Saturday, June 30th; where people of all ages and backgrounds banded together to fight against family separation and detention at the border.
One of the most touching moments of the event, was when a grandmother asked her teenage grandkid to ask me to photograph her. When I raised the camera to capture the photograph, she confidently looked me straight in the eye, and I felt the strength of her determination radiating from her. She wanted to be seen, and heard loudly for a cause she strongly believed in. I was taken aback with how powerful and stoic she stood, holding her sign for me to clearly see. It was a completely different experience from what I normally shoot, and I am honored to have been part of a heartfelt event.
